By Erik Lacayo, The Fresno Bee, Calif, Mar. 22--Plans for an ethanol production facility in Kings County recently caught the attention of the California attorney general, who is on a mission to keep the state's greenhouse emissions in check.
The proposed Hanford facility would emit about 313,000 metric tons of greenhouse gases per year to produce ethanol fuel from corn.
"These plants generate significant greenhouse gases," California Attorney General Jerry Brown said in a Thursday interview. "This is clearly not a trivial activity."
The Hanford City Council gave final approval for the project last week after Great Valley Ethanol, a Bakersfield-based energy company, finalized a settlement with the attorney general to pay a $1 million mitigation fee to the San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District.
